I don’t really understand the allure of quick release wheels.  I know bike people say they’re fancier because... reasons?  But also this so...

May I suggest using locking skewers

Wait. They just loosened the quick release and walked away? Maybe he was interrupted in the middle of trying to steal it.

Anyway, I use a method similar to this to lock my bike every single time:

Kinja'd!!!

I also have to grab the light and bike computer so they don’t walk away. I quit using the frame mount for the bike pump after the second one was stolen. I also use a standard bolt instead of the seat quick release so my seat doesn’t disappear.

they had the wheel out of the frame completely...was just held in place by the chain

soo... could be they got interupted...but tbh..im mostly putting it down to just being a dickhead

i am thinking i shouldnt half arse locking my bike again tho....

Much easier loading, but bikes you need to use quick releases are bikes you usually don’t want sitting somewhere unattended.

They make locking systems for them that still has the quick release feature.

When I get a flat half way down a mountain  quick release is far more convenient while you are all high on adrenaline and what not.

Crime of opportunity meets

“I should go inside and council this young man on how far it is negligibly warranted to let a wheel go. Actually I need to wash after touching this.”

Usually it’s for transportation. If you need to put the  bike in your car, or on a mount that requires the front wheel to be removed.

I’ve never had just a wheel stolen.

2 bikes tho. :(. One even had a flat tire when it was stolen.

never had a wheel stolen yet....but this is not the first time someone decided to loosen the wheels....just coz

at least it was just the rear wheel this time.....the front wheel is harder to notice before you start moving...

As others have said, for loading/transport/unloading and for quickly removing a wheel in case of flats. I n higher-level road racing, there’s a support vehicle and they keep a stock of wheels with fresh tires. If a rider gets a flat, they flag down the support vehicle and get a whole new wheel instead of trying to repair the flat on the side of the road . Mountain bikers are supposed to repair their flats on the course since there’s no way to provide a support vehicle on the course.

This is all fine for wannabe racers since they rarely leave their bikes unattended. For co mmuters, quick-release axles don’t make a lot of sense. But you know how it goes, it’s easier and cheaper to manufacture a bunch of one thing instead of fewer of two things. Also, people see the fancy quick releases on high-end bikes and demand it for their low-end bike. It’s the same reasons even base-level cars now have electric windows and locks.

Go to any university in the fall to see the ramifications of these choices. Ignorant freshmen lock up their bikes improperly - some use the frame, some use one or the other wheel. A thief comes along and grabs the frame and one wheel from one bike, an unsecured wheel from another bike, then rides away.

I washed my Winter bike once in 3 years of year round abuse. Zero maintenance either. The wheels were not a prime target for theft. Or contact with.

Glad you got to ride home instead of carrying it after having to go back inside to get pissed.

getting pissed wouldnt even have been an option...back at work tomorow...

really...having the rear wheel go missing today woulda been a major pain in the arse.....

as is it meant my shopping trip took 2 minutes longer than planned

alls well that ends well i guess

still...i wish people could just leave shit that aint theirs alone....

You don’t? I mean they are much quicker to remove/install for transport, and much quicker to remove/install for dealing with a flat. And of course you don’t need to carry wrenches to do so.

I’ll normally only secure the front wheel and the frame, unless I’m in a sketchy area, or it’s going to be outside a long time. The chain is enough of a deterrent for a low risk trip to the grocery store or whatever. For longer term parking, I do it like the above, except I use a separate chain lock, so the bike is secure even if someone breaks/cuts the U-lock.

I’d guess that flat tire actually makes it more likely to be stolen. Sends a signal that it’s abandoned and no one would care.

I look at it from a cost to replace pers pective. The rear wheel is a lot more expensive to replace than the front wheel.

I like th e idea of two locks. I stuck with a u-lock and cable throughout college for simplicity. The risk of it getting stolen during the day was fairly low and I never left any of my bikes on campus overnight. Then they came out with the bic pen technique and I had to reconsider my choice. I now use an upgraded u-lock with a better key, but I still use a cable. It doesn’t matter much since my bikes rarely leave my sight when they are out of the garage.

I mean a wheel with a flat tire is still a wheel.
